LAST MINUTE HELP WANTED

All Hands on Deck.

The Pier Fishing Event for Disabled Veterans cancelled because of the hurricane will now be held on Tuesday October 16th at Ocean Crest Pier, Oak Island. Volunteers are needed for this all day event.

HURRICANE RELIEF

AN AFTER  ACTION REPORT FROM

COMMANDER MIKE FEGAN

Post 543 continues to help Brunswick County Veterans and the public affected by Hurricane Florence. Even though most post members evacuated the area, the Post leadership stayed connected via email and was ready with plans that were presented to an emergency Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday September 25 and the regularly scheduled Post meeting the next evening.

At the members meeting Service Officer Paul Witmer and Steve Muir outlined plans to seek out Brunswick County Veterans who need help recovering from the storm. Steve talked about how Legion members may be eligible for financial help from the American Legion National Emergency Relief Fund.

The following days, September 27 and 28, Post members assisted the Southport Walmart store in the distribution of some 600 meals.

On October 4,5, and 6, in cooperation with Brunswick Family Assistance Post 543 set up an aid station at a church in Boiling Spring Lakes. In cooperation with FEMA an additional aid station was set up at Brunswick County Commuity College. Over $4-thousand dollars worth of Walmart Gift Cards were given to veterans for use in purchasing food cleaning supplies, etc.

Many Post 543 members also worked as volunteers for the Red Cross and faith based groups to help our neighbors.

The post is ready willing and able to help local veterans during what for many is a very difficult time. The best way to apply for assistance is to call Post 543 Service Officer Paul Witmer at 910-604-5554 or email ncpost543@gmail.com.
